  • Owatonna, Minn.—After a hiring spike earlier this year among digital and direct marketers, the employment market has slowed, according to the latest survey of hiring decision-makers and human resources officials by direct marketing executive search company Bernhart Associates.

According to Bernhart's latest “Quarterly Digital and Direct Marketing Employment Report,” which projected fourth-quarter hiring trends, 46% of companies said they plan to add staff in the upcoming quarter, down from 50% in the last quarterly report, issued in April.

Hiring freezes have increased: 21% of companies have ceased hiring, compared with 13% in the last report, and the percentage of companies planning layoffs in the upcoming quarter rose to 5%, up from 4% in the previous survey. The online survey, conducted this month, attracted 450 respondents.
