New York—Despite the explosion in social marketing, social media referral traffic lags far behind email and search, according to a report from cloud-based technology company Monetate.

According to Monetate's “Ecommerce Quarterly” report for the second quarter, the Average Order Value (AOV) of website traffic from search is $26.21 higher than traffic from social networks, while email delivered an AOV that's $18.53 higher than traffic from social networking websites such as Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter.

Monetate's report analyzes a random sample of more than 100 million online shopping experiences from 150-plus e-commerce sites that use its testing and Web optimization platform.
