New York—ALM, publisher of The American Lawyer, has named Bill Carter president-CEO. He succeeds William Pollak, who announced his resignation last year and had led ALM since 1998.
ALM's hiring of Carter makes three prominent b2b media companies—including Penton Media and Summit Business Media—that have named CEOs in the past month. Penton tapped David Kieselstein, former CEO of TNS North America; Summit picked Steve Weitzner, former chairman-CEO of Ziff Davis Enterprise.
Industry observers say Carter, Kieselstein and Weiztner have at least one thing in common: They're not magazine guys, or at least they're no longer magazine guys.
Carter comes to ALM from Thomson Reuters, where he was senior VP of the company's small law business unit. Prior to that, he was an executive at legal information company LexisNexis and a consultant at Bain & Co.
In addition to his role as CEO of TNS North America, Kieselstein led Dun & Bradstreet's small-business division. He also held a number of roles at Time Warner.
Weitzner, who helmed CMP Media before leading Ziff Davis Enterprise, was a magazine guy. But shortly before ZDE was sold to QuinStreet, he made the decision to move all its brands from print to digital-only formats.
“They have no emotional tie to print,” Ed Fitzelle, managing director at Whitestone Communications, said of the new leaders. “Their relationship to the idea of magazines is unconflicted.”
Reed Phillips, managing partner at DeSilva & Phillips, added, “It's just indicative of where the industry is going. [ALM] went outside of the industry and brought in somebody who's not necessarily a magazine advertising sales executive but someone who has more of an information provider background.”
In a statement, Charles Siegel, ALM's nonexecutive chairman, made it clear that Carter's digital experience played a key role in his hiring.
Carter, he said, “has a rich blend of strategic and operational skills that make him the ideal candidate for ALM. His leadership experiences in businesses serving our markets—especially with digital transformations, product development and value creation—will help accelerate ALM's further growth and profitability.”
In his own statement, Carter said, “I'm excited to assume the leadership of a media company that has transformed into a digitally focused enterprise providing value-added business information to its customers; and I look forward to working with the talented team of professionals at ALM to continue to drive strong growth of the company going forward.”
