  • Cupertino, Calif.—Apple Inc. has introduced its first iAd advertising platform for the iPad, with touch navigation and video appropriate for the tablet computer's large screen.

The ad, viewable with a variety of apps, including TV Guide, promotes Walt Disney Co.'s new movie, "Tron: Legacy," which debuts on Dec. 17. It features 10 minutes of video, nearby show times and songs for purchase from iTunes.

Apple's mobile ads, launched last spring, previously had run only on iPhones, with more than half of the top 25 major advertisers on Ad Age's list of "100 Leading National Advertisers" participate in the program, according to the company. The iPad format will be launched widely in early 2011 in the U.S. only, Apple said.

Google is the market leader in mobile ads, with some 59% of the $1 billion spent in 2009, according to IDC, with Apple at 8.4% of the market.
