Menlo Park, Calif.—Google Inc. has introduced ads to its Maps application, enabling advertisers to promote their companies and offer directions and click-to-call in a manner similar to paid search in a browser.
Advertisers need to add location extensions to their search campaigns or create an ad with AdWords Express, Google said in a blog post. People using Google Maps' search function may now see a banner ad with a title, ad text and link to get directions. Swiping will reveal other information, such as address, phone number, photos and reviews, with the advertiser charged on a cost-per-click basis.
Last month Google augmented its mobile version of Maps to include customer ratings, discount offers and other features usually associated with social rating services.
