Congress, GAO move to block USPS service cuts

  • Washington, D.C.—Congress and the Government Accountability Office took steps Thursday to block the U.S. Postal Service's plan to eliminate most Saturday delivery, a move the USPS says it needs to help it regain solvency.

    Congress passed legislation that requires six-day delivery. This move was supported by the GAO in a legal opinion presented to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

    The USPS' position is, because it plans on Saturdays only to cut delivery of periodicals, first-class and standard mail but continue to deliver packages and pharmaceuticals, it would remain in compliance with current law.
