  • New York—Search advertising on mobile devices has surged dramatically in this year's fourth quarter. Smartphone spending on pay-per-click search ads rose 307% over the year-earlier period, and budgets devoted to tablet search jumped 231%, according to a report by ad management technology company IgnitionOne Inc.

In addition, the company's “Mid Q4 2012” report found overall search expenditures increased 15% in the Oct. 1-Nov. 26 period compared with the year earlier. Black Friday (Nov. 23 this year) and Cyber Monday (Nov. 26) search expenditures overall rose 29% over last year's Thanksgiving period.

IgnitionOne's report is based on a quarterly tracking of impressions and clicks on Google and Yahoo/Bing search networks, Google AdEx and other display networks.
