  • New York—Scans of quick response (QR) barcodes on printed materials are rising dramatically, with 13 million mobile device scans in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 157% over the same period a year earlier, according to QR barcode platform company Scanbuy Inc.

According to Scanbuy's “Mobile Barcode Trend Report,” an analysis of traffic on its own ScanLife platform as well as from third parties, videos are the most common type of content delivered when a QR code is scanned from a printed surface. Other popular content includes app downloads, product details, loyalty programs and sweepstakes.

The leading medium on which QR codes are placed is packaging, followed by the Web, direct mail, magazines and in-store displays, according to Scanbuy's study. The countries with the greatest number of QR code scans are, in order, the U.S., Spain, Canada, Denmark and France.
