‘Wall Street Journal’ bucks industry circulation trend

Story posted: October 27, 2009 - 2:30 pm EDT

Schaumburg, Ill.—Of the 25 largest-circulation newspapers in the U.S., only one—Dow Jones & Co.’s The Wall Street Journal—posted a gain in circulation in the 12-month period ended Sept. 30, according to data released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

The Journal’s circulation increased by 0.61% during the period. Its combined print and electronic paid circulation of 2,024,267 makes it the largest daily newspaper in the U.S.

USA Today was second in circulation, at 1,900,116. Its paid circulation declined 17.15% in the year ended Sept. 30. USA Today said its print circulation of 1,891,604 remains the largest in the U.S., because much of the Journal’s paid circulation is electronic.

The New York Times saw its circulation decline 7.28% to 927,851.

“Our business plan over the last two years has been to expand our content, expand our platform. I think the market is recognizing that and rewarding us for it,” said Paul Bascobert, CMO of Dow Jones’ consumer media group.
