Bing loses search market share, Google gains

Story posted: October 5, 2009 - 2:47 pm EDT

Boston—Microsoft’s new Bing search engine experienced its first retrenchment in U.S. search market share following gains every month since its introduction in May, according to Web analytics company StatCounter. Meanwhile, Google solidified its leadership position.

Bing’s September share of U.S. search queries was 8.51%, down from the 9.64% share logged in August. Yahoo Search also fell in September, from 10.50% to 9.40%.

Google, meanwhile, gained U.S. market share, rising to 80.08% in September from 77.83% in August. Globally, Google is even more dominant, logging 90.54% of all search queries in September, up from 90% the month before.
