Bing gains share, adds Twitter to results

Story posted: July 2, 2009 - 12:36 pm EDT

Redmond, Wash.—Bing, the month-old search engine from Microsoft Corp., has slightly outperformed its predecessor in market share.

According to data from Statcounter, Bing garnered 8.23% of the U.S. search market in June, up from the 7.81% logged in May by Microsoft’s previous search engine, Live Search. The bounce came on the strength of Bing’s splashy launch, fueled by a $100 million ad campaign that began June 3.

On Wednesday Bing unveiled its first foray into integrating real-time data into its search results, starting with tweets from microblog Twitter. Microsoft said it chose several thousand Twitter accounts based on their number of followers and their tweet volume. It will update Twitter results every 60 seconds.

Bing’s market-share gain appears to be Google’s slight loss, with the search giant capturing 78.48% of the market, down from 78.72% in May. Yahoo, meanwhile, inched up from 10.99% of all searches in May to 11.04% last month.
