DMA, coalition of publishers and associations, urge postal relief

Story posted: January 23, 2009 - 12:24 pm EDT

New York—In a letter sent this week to federal committees in Washington, D.C., the Direct Marketing Association and a coalition of publishers, associations and direct mailers urged support of legislation providing financial relief for the U.S. Postal Service.

In a letter addressed to the chairmen of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Postal Service and the District of Columbia, the organizations support postal reform bill HR 22, which would save the USPS about $2 billion by changing health benefit payouts, according to the groups.

“The current financial crisis, if unaddressed quickly, could necessitate either dramatic cutbacks in service or an exigent increase under the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006,” the letter stated. ”The former would be unacceptable, exacerbating problems for commerce and any hoped-for economic recovery. The latter would be unaffordable and would not resolve the problem.”

Other signatories of the letter included the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers, Magazine Publishers of America, Major Mailers Association, National Newspaper Association, RR Donnelley Logistics and Time Warner.
